James Butler was born in 1931 and studied at St. Martin's School of Art and the Royal College of Art. Initially he worked as a stone carver with Gerald Giudici on architectural sculptures, he then went on to teach drawing and sculpture at the City and Guilds of London Art School. In 1964 he became a Member of the Royal Academy.
