Angus Murdie

Angus Murdie studied for a Fine Art degree at Brighton University in 1993 then based himself in Oxford. His move to New Zealand in 2006 with his family has produced an impressive burst of creativity which the Richard Hagen gallery is excited to be the first to exhibit. Powerful, dynamic, forceful and organic are all words which can be used to describe his work.

Angus says:

“I think of my paintings as landscapes. The forms within them are alive and react as such to each other and to their surroundings. To me my paintings are like snapshots capturing a moment in the life of the forms they depict. Nature is my greatest influence, I see and feel its energy. More recently my landscape base has been New Zealand. The black forms are the mountains and associated with these the weather, storms, and rain.

My chosen medium is oil paint because of its naturalistic colour and texture. I work on paper because it allows me to scrape back areas of paint, exposing hidden layers and it also aids the drying process enabling me to work over painted areas more quickly.”
